Education and Capacity Building
Most students have to walk for two or more hours to attend school in Kailash Rural Municipality. Although the schools are free, parents cannot afford the necessary school supplies such as lunch and uniforms for their children. In addition to this, the school dropout rate is very high. Most teachers teach without appropriate pedagogical training. (SDA Baseline Survey Report 2015)
Chepangs and other minorities in Kailash Rural Municipality are not literate, so they do not have access to government resources and services. In Kalikatar and Bharta, 66% and 90% of Chepangs are illiterate (SDA Baseline Survey Report 2015). So SDA supports the school students up to grade 5 in 4 schools with these needs.
Why do we focus on educating girls in Literacy Home, a Community Multi-Purpose Complex (building)?
Girls break to attend school because of the long distances to school from early in the region. According to a study by the Nepalese government, 63% of women marry before they reach the age of 18, while 7% before 10. The cultures, traditions and norms practised in rural areas like Makwanpur are deeply rooted in the notion that deprives women of pursuing or continuing their studies. Thus, to accommodate and support fifteen school girls in their studies, SDA built a Literacy Home in Kalikatar.
Education and Capacity Building (ECB) Project focuses on increasing the literacy level through active interventions of the targeted beneficiaries; school going children of Kailash Rural Municipality wards no 3, 4, and 7. Moreover, parents, teachers, and stakeholders associated with the school-going children also fall under beneficiaries and target groups. The target is to develop a regular school-going habit and create skilled and educated youths for the community and nation as-a-whole.
The major activities carried out under ECB are:
School Midday Meal
Child clubs
Parents meeting
Pedagogic support: teaching aid trunks, teachers’ training
Vocational Education
Literacy Home & Library
Scholarship support
Early Child Care and Development Centre (ECCD)
